D D he word obstetrics is derived from the Latin “ob” and “stare,” which ean “to stand by.” Standing by, or in ront of, the laboring woman is intended o be the assistance to the pregnant oman during labor and delivery. Mangement of labor and delivery is at the eart of the obstetric profession, is the ost important aspect of the support to he pregnancy, and often is the aspect hat made us go into 1 of the most rearding and satisfying professions one ould ever choose. There are more than 130 million anual births in the world, of which more han 4 million occur in the United States. anagement of labor and delivery is cerainly 1 of the most common medical isues to face health personnel. Prevention f complications has priority over mangement of complications. Obstetric are has been blessed in the last few years y evidence-based research. The aim f this article is to review the evidence for he management of labor and delivery, nd offer recommendations that are ased (where available) on randomized rials. Proper choice of interventions, roven to be associated with the highest afety and effectiveness, with avoidance f less safe and effective ones, will miniize the morbidity, and possibly the
